QUIZZES -

what will be covered?

topic coverage includes last week's lab and this week's lab.

what kind of information should I know/study?

balanced reactions carried out or to be carried out
theoretical yield (in grams or mL) of products
any limiting reagent of reactions
names and structures and hazards of all chemicals used
key physical properties of reactants, reagents, products, and solvents
(e.g. solvent bp, product bp or mp, product color)
lab equipment & set-ups used, techniques used, know how product(s) will be purified
study questions from last week's lab

what is a theoretical yeild?

the amount of product (in moles and grams) that will result if the reaction occurs in 100% yield

what is a limiting reagent?

a reagent whose amount used (in moles) limits the amount (in moles) of product that can be formed. for example,

acetanilide is the limiting reagent (on which theoretical yield is based)
theoretical yield of bromoacetanilide (all isomers) = 0.011 moles x 214.1 g/mol = 2.4 g
