Projects 1. Low Curie Temperature Magnetic Nanoparticles for Hyperthermia Treatment of Cancer Hyperthermia is a procedure that can be used to treat tumors by applying localized heat. By linking magnetic nanoparticles to targeting moieties, such as folic acid or adenoviral vectors, they can be targeted to individual cells, and an alternating current magnetic field can be used to induce a localized temperature spike, treating only the cells nearby the nanoparticles. This technique has the potential to both increase the effectiveness of cancer therapy while reducing the side effects commonly associated with cancer chemotherapy. Our research investigates new magnetic materials that have a Curie temperature that is slightly above body temperature (40-45 oC) so that the temperature in the body does not reach levels that could damage large sections of tissue.
