The Department of Chemistry at The University of Alabama offers
degrees in chemistry at the B.S.,
M.S., and Ph.D.
levels. We are a growing program with 22 faculty and approximately 80
graduate students. Research and teaching are conducted in the major
disciplines of chemistry: analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical
chemistries and biochemistry. In addition, chemistry faculty actively
participate in interdisciplinary
scientific research programs involving synthesis, the chemistry
of materials, biological chemistry, and environmental chemistry.

The Department congratulates Dr.
Michael Jennings and Dr.
Timothy Snowden who both have been promoted to the rank of associate
professor with tenure effective for the 2009-2010 academic year.
Melody Kelley and Nicole
Gray received 1st and 2nd place awards
respectively in the Physical Science Division at the national LSAMP/Bridge
to Doctorate Program conference. Melody works in Dr.
Blackstock's lab, while Nicole works with Dr.
Thrasher.
Students doing undergraduate research with Chemistry faculty took
4 of the 6 awards for Natural Sciences division at the UA Undergraduate
Research and Creative Activity Conference. Awardees were: Awuri
Asuru (1st
place oral), Maggie Adams (2nd place
oral), Joel
Schoenberg (1st
place poster) and
Duncan Harmon (3rd place poster).
Chemistry major Rebecca Long has received
a Goldwater Scholarship.
Chemistry majors Richard Cockrum and Emily
Wayman have received
the Hollings Scholarship sponsored by NOAA.
Congratulations to all Chemistry students who received awards
during Honors Week festivities.
Congratulations to the chemistry majors inducted into Gamma
Sigma Epsilon, a national chemistry honorary society.
Dr. John Vincent was named to the Chemistry Leadership Group for
the NSF-REU program.
Chemistry majors James Allen and Awuri
Asuru were chosen as member
of the 2009 cohort of McNair
Scholars.
Rick Smith has received the J. Allen Alexander award, which is
the highest recognition given by the American Scientific Glassblowers'
