TEXTS: There
is no textbook for this class. All materials will consist of extracts from the
recent Russian press.
DESCRIPTION: Students
will read and translate articles from the Russian press. The content of the
articles as well as techniques of translation will be the focus of class
discussion.
PREREQUISITE: Rus 310 or Rus 362.
GOALS: The student will:
1) Learn the basic structures used in Russian journalistic prose.
2) Learn the basic vocabulary of the Russian press.
REQUIREMENTS:
There are no tests scheduled for this course. Students will be evaluated on the basis of regular homework assignments, six individual translation assignments (approximately every two weeks), class participation and an individual final translation project (in lieu of a final exam) due on December 13.
Attendance:
Attendance is required and will be recorded. Poor attendance will be reflected
in your grade: FIVE absences will reduce your grade by a third (i.e., a
plus/minus) and TEN absences will reduce your grade by a full letter. If for
some reason you miss class, be sure to check with me or another student as to
what you have missed. THAT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.
GRADING:
Translation Assignments: 40%
Final Translation Project: 30%
Homework and Class Performance: 30%
Course grades are given on the plus/minus system. For an explanation see the undergraduate catalog p. 22.
