The Department of Chemistry at The University of Alabama offers
degrees in chemistry at the B.S.,
M.S., and Ph.D.
levels. We are a growing program with 25 faculty and approximately 90
graduate students. Research and teaching are conducted in the
major disciplines of chemistry: analytical, inorganic, organic,
and physical chemistries and biochemistry. In addition, chemistry
faculty actively participate in interdisciplinary
scientific research programs involving synthesis, the chemistry
of materials, biological chemistry, and environmental chemistry.
Applications to the Graduate
Program are now being accepted. For application information
or to arrange a visit to our department contact the
. Also feel free to contact the graduate
ambassadors for chemistry.
Alumni,
we want to hear from you. We are trying
to collect info on our B.S.
and graduate alumni.
Dr. Patrick Frantom has
received an NSF CAREER award in excess of $1 million to support
his research. The CAREER is the premiere award for young faculty
from the National Science Foundation. A&S press release
Chemistry major Sarah McFann is spending the summer doing research
at the University of Hiroshima. Read about her experiences on her
blog.
The Department is pleased to welcome the 2013 cohort of REU
students. The
NSF-funded REU program supports undergraduate research experiences
with UA Chemistry faculty.
The Department of Chemistry hosted
the 2013
Diversity Awareness Symposium on April 27th. The symposium
included talks by STEM faculty from underrepresented groups,
panel discussions on underrepresented groups in STEM, and an
undergraduate research and outreach poster session. The symposium
was organized by Dr.
Busenlehner as part of her NSF CAREER award.
Michele Stover took first prize in the Graduate Student Poster
Competition at the annual SETCA (Southeastern Theoretical Chemistry
Association) annual meeting held at Auburn on May 10-11. Michele
is a graduate student in Dr.
David Dixon's group.
Dr. Kevin
Shaughnessy received the College of Arts & Sciences
Jim Salem Chair award presented by Dean Olin.
The Department is pleased to announce that Dr.
Elizabeth Papish will join the faculty as an Associate
Professor in August. Dr. Papish's research interests are focused
on the design and application of bio-inspired metal catalysts
for organic transformations.
Congratulations to the Chemistry students who received awards
