Welcome

The Department of Chemistry at The University of Alabama offers degrees in chemistry at the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. levels. We are a growing program with 22 faculty and approximately 80 graduate students. Research and teaching are conducted in the major disciplines of chemistry: analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistries and biochemistry. In addition, chemistry faculty actively participate in interdisciplinary scientific research programs involving synthesis, the chemistry of materials, biological chemistry, and environmental chemistry.

SETCA 2008: The Chemistry Department will be hosting the 2008 meeting of the Southeastern Theoretical Chemistry Association.

Departmental News

Senior Chemistry major Samantha Mroczynski was on the winning team in the Alabama Launchpad Business Plan Competition. The team earned $100,000 to help establish their start-up business. UA press release

Twenty-four chemistry majors were inducted into the UA chapter of Gamma Sigma Epsilon, which is a national chemistry honorary society.

Prof. Peter Stang from the University of Utah presented the inaugural Anthony J. Arduengo, III Lecture on March 6th and 7th.

Senior chemistry major Jackson Switzer was one of 7 UA students named to the USA Today All-Academic Team. UA press release

Jesse Carrick has received an ACS Organic Division travel award to attend the National ACS meeting in New Orleans. Jesse is a member of the Jennings research group.

The department congratulates the students who earned chemistry degrees in the December commencement ceremony.

Dr. Kevin Shaughnessy was named a Distinguished Teaching Fellow (2007-2010) by Dean Olin at the fall A&S faculty meeting. Dr. Shaughnessy joins Dr. Kevin Redding among the current Distinguished Teaching Fellows.

Dr. Anthony Arduengo has been elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Dr. Arduengo was recognized for his groundbreaking work in the area of stable carbenes. UA press release

Congratulations to Dr. Kevin Shaughnessy who is a recipient of the 2007 Outstanding Commitment to Teaching Award presented to 4 faculty annually by the Alabama Alumni Association.

The Department is pleased to welcome Dr. Laura Busenlehner as an assistant professor. Dr. Busenlehner's research interests are in the areas of biochemistry and bioinorganic chemistry.

Kathryn Tippey, who carries out research with Dr. Dixon, was awarded a NOAA Hollings Scholarship.

Dr. John Vincent received the Emmett B. Carmichael award from the Alabama Academy of Science during their annual meeting at Tuskegee University.

Dr. Michael Cava, Professor Emeritus, and the Aldrich Company have contributed funds to establish the Michael P. Cava Endowed Support Fund. This fund will support a lectureship, the Michael P. Cava Classroom, and a journal library in the department. A&S Press Release
