UA Chemistry Department News
April 2012
- Parker McCrary has been selected to receive
a 2012 National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship
sponsored by the Department of Defense. Parker is a graduate student
in Prof. Robin Rogers's
group.
- Prof. David Dixon was
selected as the UA representative for the 2012 SEC Faculty Achievement
Award. One faculty member from each SEC institution received this
award. The SEC Professor of the Year will be chosen from the Faculty
Achievement Award Winners.
- Congratulations to Jessica Duke (Dixon)
and Erica Schwalm (Frantom) who received
first and second place respectively in the UA Undergraduate Research
Conference Natural Sciences Oral Division. Joshua
Oriez (Blackstock) received 4th place in the Emerging Scholars
division.
- Congratulations to all of the Chemistry students who received awards
during Honors Week at UA.
- Nine students doing research with Chemistry faculty received Randall
Outstanding Undregraduate Research Awards. The students were: Jessica
Duke (Dixon), JT Davis (Dixon), Ryan
Flamerich (Dixon), Jessica Jones (Shaughnessy), Matthew
Kelley (Dixon), Matthew Outlaw (Dixon,
ChE), J. Pierce Robinson (Dixon, Business), Erica
Schwalm (Frantom), Stephen Walker (Dixon). Jessica
Duke received the Catherine Johnson
Randall award and Matthew Kelley received
the Outstand CBHP project award.
- Chemistry major Stephen Walker has been
named a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship recipient. Stephen is a junior
chemistry major and does research in Prof. David Dixon's lab. Chemsitry
minor Chelsea "Raulie" Raulerson receive honorable mention. UA

- Ryan Flamerich, a Chemical Engineering major doing undergraduate
research with Dr. David Dixon, has been awarded a Harry S. Truman Scholarship. UA

- Congratulations to senior Chemistry major Jessica
Duke has received a prestigious NSF Graduate Research Fellowship.
Jessica is the first student to receive one of these awards as an
undergraduate student in our department. Graduate student Parker
McCrary recieved Honorable Mention in the fellowship competition. Former
student Robert Sharpe (BS 11), who is in the PhD program in Chemistry
at UNC Chapel Hill, also received an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship.
- Graduate Student Christopher Griggs was part of a team that received
the ERDC Award for Outstanding Achievement in Technology Transfer for
developing and successfully transitioning the Small Arms Firing Range
(SAFR) remediation technology to the field and private sector through
licenses, patents, and cooperative research and development agreements.
