Chemistry Department Research

Department faculty carry out research on a wide range of chemical topics, which encompass the traditional areas of chemistry--analytical, biological, inorganic, organic, and physical--as well as a variety of interdisciplinary research areas. Department faculty are involved in a variety of interdisciplinary research centers, such as the Center for Materials and Information Technology (MINT), Center for Green Manufacturing (CGM), Center for Advanced Vehicle Technology (CAVT), and the Center for Biomolecular Products (CBP).

The department is well equipped for modern research with a variety of instrumentation. The department has excellent facilities for NMR, mass spectrometry, X-ray crystallography, and surface analysis. The department also houses one of the best equipped EPR facilities in the country. The research effort is supported by dedicated staff. PhD level scientists who operate the NMR, EPR, and mass spectrometry facilities. In addition, the department employs a full time master glass blower, electronics technician. The college machine shop is available to department researchers to fabricate and repair instruments and other devices.

Undergraduate students play an active role in the Department's research effort. All chemistry majors and other students interested in chemistry are encouraged to become involved in an undergraduate research project. The department also offers a summer research program for students from colleges and universities from around the country.
