The following are some suggested essay topics. Please feel free to modify them, or develop you own ideas. The essays should be 10 double-spaced typed pages and should include illustrations, footnotes (or endnotes), and a bibliography. Essays are due on 22 April 1998.

Remember that text copied from sources must be in quotation marks and must be copied exactly, with the reference given as a footnote or endnote; the ideas or words of others must be credited and the source given (anything else is plagiarism). The system for citing your references in your notes and bibliography must be in a consistent, recognized format.

 

 1. Discuss the depiction of foreigners in Tang art.

 2. Discuss the narrative in Tang painting and its legacy in later Chinese art.

 3. Compare the painting styles of Wang Wei and the Li family, and their impact on later painting and connoisseurship.

 4. Discusss the development of the pagoda (or any other architectural structure) in Chinese art, and its final (?) form in the Tang. You may choose to concentrate on one particular building or region.

 5. Discuss the importance of copies of paintings in Chinese culture, with special emphasis on paintings from the Tang.

 6. Discuss the development of Buddhist art (painting or sculpture) in the Tang.

 7. Discuss Tang costume and/or textiles using archaeological remains, and extant paintings and sculpture for your information.

 8. Discuss the depiction of women in Tang art (including literature).

 9. Discuss the history of the Silk Road and its importance to Tang culture.

 10. Discuss Tang ceramics in terms of style, materials, use, and influences. Were there any major innovations at this time, and what makes Tang ceramics unique?

 11. Discuss the use of art and material culture in bolstering the reigns of selected Tang rulers.

 12. Buddhist cave temples were made throughout north China. You may discuss the development of this artistic form, concentrate on one site, or compare two sites in terms of size, style, and patronage.
