Dear AL AATG chapter members, I hope that your school year is going fine. Here are news relating to our AL AATG chapter.
The Fall 2008 AATG Alabama chapter meeting will took place on the campus of Samford University on at 10 a.m. on October 18, 2008 followed by a roundtable discussion on study abroad experiences for German students. The minutes of the meeting will be available on the chapter website. The 14th Annual High School German Day will take place on March 2, 2009. The topic is: Berühmte Persönlichkeiten. The German Day website provides all necessary information. For further information click here. Congratulations to two of our chapter members! In a true Alabama sweep, the award for best article in the German Quarterly is going to Dr. Rolf Goebel at the University of Alabama, Huntsville.
The award for best article in the Unterrichtspraxis is going to Dr. Douglas Lightfoot at the University of Alabama. They will be honored at the AATG luncheon during the AATG/ACTFL Annual Meeting in Orlando, FL, November 21-23, so please make sure to attend the luncheon if you are attending. Congratulations to both of them! Other Announcements: W.I.L.D. Weekend Immersed in Language Development. The dates for this year are Friday November 14 – Sunday November 18, 2008 at YMCA Hargis Retreat Center. 30 students of German may participate. The cost is $50 per student and includes all expenses. Please encourage your students to apply. This is an immersion experience for high school students. Participating students should be able to communicate in the target language (in at least German II). The event is sponsored by the Alabama Association of Foreign Language Teachers and by the Alabama Humanities Foundation, a state program of the National Endowment for the Humanities. This year the program will be led by Gunars Cazers (The Capitol School, Tuscaloosa), Trudy Clements (Vestavia High School, Birmingham), Dr. Rasma Lazda (University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa), and Adam Martin (Auburn High School, Auburn). Chapter Projects New deadline of May 1, 2009 for 2010 chapter projects! Let us plan now for projects to taking place during 2010 (between 1/1/2010 and 12/31/2010). Chapter Project Proposals must be submitted online.
