IF YOU TRAVEL ON YOUR OWN TO KLAGENFURT
Upon arrival in Klagenfurt you have to get to the Mozartheim (name of the dorm).
Address: Hochschülerhaus Mozartheim
9020 Klagenfurt
Mozartstrasse 61
Tel. 0463 -23782
BY PLANE
If you arrive at Klagenfurt Airport:
The airport is about 4 km from town and 8 km from the university. Take bus line 42 from the airport to the city ("Zentrum"). Change at Heiligengeistplatz to bus line 12 or 10 to the Mozartheim. Bus number 12 stops very close by, exit at the stop Ginzkeygasse, but line 12 does not run on Sundays. If you take bus 10, exit at the stop Heinzelsteg. Cross the street, and walk down Mozartstraße (sign on corner), the Mozartheim is about two blocks on your right. If you arrive late at night, take better a taxi (tell the driver the address: Mozartheim, Mozartstrasse 61). A taxi from the airport to the university costs around EUR 15 to EUR 20.

If you arrive at Vienna Airport:
From Vienna airport there is a bus to "Wiener Südbahnhof" (Vienna Railwaystation South). The bus runs from 7:10 a.m. to midnight every 20 minutes, costs run about EUR 6, the trip takes about 20 minutes. From "Wiener Südbahnhof" there runs a train to Klagenfurt every two hours. Price per person is about EUR 32.
If you arrive at any other airport:
Get to the main railway station of the city of your arrival (Hauptbahnhof). From there travel to Klagenfurt Hauptbahnhof.
If you arrive in Frankfurt airport and continue by train, you will not have to leave the actual building in order to get to the train station. This is not the Hauptbahnhof but the station "Frankfurt Flughafen Fernbahnhof" or Frankfurt airport.
From Frankfurt it is about a 9 hour train ride to Klagenfurt.
From Munich (München) Hauptbahnhof you can take a direct train to Klagenfurt, and it is about a 5 hour train ride. When choosing a connection go for the one where you have to change least unless you have to wait forever.Cheap flights to Klagenfurt from Berlin, Hamburg, Hannover, and Köln/Bonn:
You can buy cheap airline tickets from Berlin, Hamburg, Hannover, and Köln/Bonn to Klagenfurt through Hapag-Lloyd Express. If you will be close to one of those cities before traveling to Klagenfurt, check out the possibilities.BY TRAIN
If you need to look up a train connection you can do so on the web page of the Deutsche Bahn (http://www.bahn.de). On the left you will see "Reiseauskunft". Fill in all the info needed, and you will find your connection.DO NOT FORGET: Europe uses 24 hrs (military time), so 18 Uhr is 6 p.m.; also do not forget that the date is written differently July 2 is "2. Juli" or "2.7."
The website for the Austrian railway Österreichische Bundesbahnen ÖBB is http://www.oebb.at.
From Hauptbahnhof Klagenfurt (main station Klagenfurt) take bus line 40/41/42. Change at stop "Heiligengeistplatz" to bus line 12 or 10 to the Mozartheim. You can of course also take a taxi (about EUR 11).

THINGS NOT TO FORGET * Passport
* International Student ID Card
* Medical Insurance information
* All medication you take on a regular basis
* Comfortable shoes - prepare to walk a lot!
* Your ATM card. Make sure your bank let's you withdraw money in Austria and Germany. Let your bank know that you will be traveling to Europe so that they know to expect charges from there.
* A (prepaid) phone card you may use from abroad (see below section on phones).
WHAT SHOULD I PACK? WHAT NOT TO TAKE? Experienced travelers will tell you to pack light. Do not forget - we will be also travelling for a week in Germany BY TRAIN after our stay in Austria. Consider taking a large backpack if you have one instead of a suitcase. Bring also a small backpack for day trips. I personally prefer to travel with one small suitcase on rolls. You must be able to handle your own baggage!
BRING: A battery powered alarm clock, a wrist watch, an umbrella and/or rain gear, a sweatshirt or sweater, a light jacket (rain resistant, if possible), swim suit, broken in walking shoes, small backpack, comfortable clothes that can be layered (stay away from dry-clean only or things that might be ruined easily in hot water), sunglasses, a spare battery for your camera, your personal toilettries (toothpaste, shampoo, etc.), a refill of any prescription medicine that you take, a favorite paperback book, your favorite over-the-counter pain reliever, if you wish also stomach medicine for indigestion, sunscreen, an ethernet cable if you bring a laptop and want to have internet access while in Austria.
Bring clothes that you can wash easily. There are washers and dryers in the Mozartheim, but you might end up waiting in line using them. Flip-flops are fine inside but not sufficient for walking in the cities. You need comfortable shoes!
DO NOT BRING: Jewelery, Expensive clothing or other personal possessions of value, pillow, cell phones (unless you checked with your carrier that it will work abroad), beepers, or any appliances with electric motors. Hair dryers and curling irons may be bought in Austria if necessary. Battery chargers and contact lense disinfectant units work with transformers.
Bring your swim suit! Swimming in the clean lake in Klagenfurt is wonderful.
Do not bring hair dryers and the like unless they are dual voltage, meaning they are running on 220 volt AND you have an adapter. If you cannot live without a hairdryer, you can always buy one in Austria for about 10 EUR.
WHAT ABOUT THE WEATHER? The weather is somewhat unpredictable (think again layers). Check out the links below for current weather:
Klagenfurt weather
München / Munich weather
WHAT ABOUT MONEY? Austria and Germany both have EUROS (1 Euro = 100 cents).
Exchange rate on June 4: 1 EUR = 1.35 USD; 1 USD = 0.74 EUR
Visa® or Mastercard® with PIN (it doesn't hurt to have a spare card), Automatic Teller Machine Cards also work in Europe, but check with your bank first to make sure.
Travelers checks are inconvenient and expensive, but if you prefer those, they also work.
The easiest way to get EUROS is to use your ATM card once you are in Europe. This will give you the best exchange rate, however check with your bank how much thay charge for a transaction abroad. It might be smarter to use the ATM once a week instead of every day if you need cash, so think ahead. Do not carry all your money in US $, if it is stolen, it is gone! Keep only a small amount of $ as an emergency fund. If you can pay with a credit card, do so if you have one. Credit cards charge usually the excahnge rate of the day without any fees. Be prepared that credit cards are not that commonly used in Europe as in the US, so always have some cash handy. Check the exchange rate. It is hard to predict how the exchange rate changes, but it is a good idea to keep track of it if you plan to make a larger purchase.
If you wish to check the current exchange rate, follow this link.
WHERE WILL WE BE STAYING IN KLAGENFURT? We will be staying in the Mozartheim, about 10-15 minutes from campus. The address is:
Mozartheim
A-9020 Klagenfurt
Mozartstrasse 61
AUSTRIA
If someone wishes to write you, the person should include your name and "Alabama in Austria" with the name. Letters take about 5-8 days (airmail).
The Mozartheim is close to the university and about a 15-20 minute walk to downtown Klagenfurt. The lake (Wörthersee) is also about 20 minutes away.
WHAT ABOUT THE WEEKENDS? There will be day trips on Saturdays for the first and second weekend while we are in Klagenfurt, very likely to Salzburg, the Kärnten (Carinthia) mountains, Slovenia and Venice. You are free to travel on your own (or with another person) on one weekend or decide to stay and participate in an additional third Saturday day trip. The costs for the trips for the third weekend are your own. We are free on Sundays.
WHAT ABOUT PHONES? WILL MY CELL PHONE WORK THERE? Get yourself a calling card w/ PIN: ATT®, Sprint® and MCI® all have toll free "900" numbers with English speaking operators. Also check out the GoAbroad Phonecard.
Cell phones are called in German "Handy". If you cannot live without your "Handy" I recommend to get a prepaid cell phone once you are in Austria unless you have checked with your cell phone provider that your phone will be working in Austria. You can get an eety prepaid SIMS card to put into your current cell phone as a starter set for EUR 14.90; this includes EUR 5 call time. You can buy this starter set in Klagenfurt at the Mobile5 Handy Shop on Heuplatz 2/Theatergasse close to the Arkaden Shopping Mall (info from 2006). Calling the United States is 13 cents a minute, SMS sent to all countries worldwide is 9 cents. For further information see eety. This is the service the program director used last year, and it worked great.
