Tuscaloosa and the Metropolitan Area
The College
of Community Health Sciences was established in 1971 in response to
the need for accessible primary health care. Through research and
service, as well as the education of residents, medical students, and allied
health professionals, the College of Community Health Sciences is filling
this need. Since its inception, more than 50% of 258 graduates have
entered practices in Alabama. The College of Community Health Sciences,
located at The University of Alabama in
Tuscaloosa, is part of the University
of Alabama School of Medicine, whose first campus is an hour away in
Birmingham.

CCHS is the training site for 36 family practice residents;
-
More than 20 full-time faculty oversee rotations;
-
More than 150 adjunct professors and local physicians participate in the
program;

Required rotations include family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics
and gynecology, pediatrics, surgery and psychiatry;

Faculty expertise includes behavioral science, geriatric medicine, occupational
medicine, sports medicine, public health, medical education, nutrition,
social services, and outpatient surgery;

CCHS is the clinical training site for 50 third- and fourth-year medical
students from The University of Alabama School of Medicine.
Instruction in the College is supported by the Health Science Library,
located in the Educational Tower at DCH Regional Medical Center, the primary
inpatient training site of the program.

Holdings include more than 16,000 books and journals, an audiovisual collection
of 1,500 tapes, videocassettes and audiocassettes, and subscriptions to
475 journals.

Electronic services are provided on four computer workstations including
access to the WWW, Medline, Psychlit, and other general databases. A Clinical
Digital Library, maintained in conjuction with the UA School
of Library and Information Studies, is provided through a link on the
library's homepage.

Through interlibrary loan agreements, additional support is available from
the Lister Hill Library of Health
Sciences in Birmingham and other libraries in the Southeastern/Atlantic
Regional Medical Network.
