The College of Community Health Sciences was established in 1971 in response to the need for accessible primary health care.  Through research and service, as well as the education of residents, medical students, and allied health professionals, the College of Community Health Sciences is filling this need.  Since its inception, more than 50% of 258 graduates have entered practices in Alabama.  The College of Community Health Sciences, located at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, is part of the University of Alabama School of Medicine, whose first campus is an hour away in Birmingham.

  • CCHS is the training site for 36 family practice residents;
  • More than 20 full-time faculty oversee rotations;
  • More than 150 adjunct professors and local physicians participate in the program;
  • Required rotations include family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, surgery and psychiatry;
  • Faculty expertise includes behavioral science, geriatric medicine, occupational medicine, sports medicine, public health, medical education, nutrition, social services, and outpatient surgery;
  • CCHS is the clinical training site for 50 third- and fourth-year medical students from The University of Alabama School of  Medicine.
Instruction in the College is supported by the Health Science Library, located in the Educational Tower at DCH Regional Medical Center, the primary inpatient training site of the program.
