Professor Thompson’s research addresses the thermodynamics and corresponding mechanisms of phase transformation behavior and its control on microstrucutural stability. In this effort, particular attention is given to the influence of interfaces and phase segregation during the early stages of nucleation and growth. Professor Thompson has an emphasis in using analytical microscopy to quantify this phenomenon.


Detailed research efforts include:
1) Tailoring multi-phase microstructures in metals and ceramics
2) Structural characterization of magnetic nanostructures.
3) Thin film and heterostructure growth behavior
4) Development of microscopy-based strategies and techniques for the preparation and the characterization of materials
