Welcome to Student Assistant Employment
Congratulations on your new position as a Student Assistant at The University of Alabama. Whether you are new to Student Assistant Employment, or you are starting a new position in a different UA Department, please review the following information to ensure you start your job off on the right foot. As always, please feel free to contact the UA Office of Student Employment with any additional questions you may have.
- You must maintain enrollment requirements while employed.
In order to continue to participate in Student Assistant Employment, you must be enrolled in a degree-granting program at UA and be registered for a minimum number of classes for the semester in which you are working:
- Undergraduate students must be enrolled for least 6 credit hours
- Graduate Students must be enrolled for at least 4.5 credit hours
- International Students must be enrolled for at least 12 credit hours (full time)
- Graduating Students in final semester have no minimum enrollment requirement
You DO NOT have to be enrolled in summer classes to work as a Student Assistant during the summer, as long as you were enrolled for required number of credit hours for the preceding spring semester as well as the following fall semester.
Incoming Freshmen and Transfer Students: You may work during the summer without being enrolled in summer classes as long as you have a CWID number and are enrolled for the required number of credit hours.
If you drop a class or otherwise change your enrollment status while employed as a Student Assistant and no longer meet enrollment requirements, you must notify your supervisor immediately.

- Provide necessary ID to your Supervisor to ensure your paperwork is completed on time.
Your supervisor is required to submit hiring paperwork with 3 days of your employment. You will have to complete the Federal I-9 form which verifies your identity and eligibility to work in the United States and a W-4 (tax withholding) form. - Attend New Hire Employee Orientation and additional Student Assistant Training.
For first-time Student Assistants, new hire employee orientation is designed to help you become familiar with what the University expects of Student Assistants, and to learn the general work performance standards which apply to all UA Student Employees.
