COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
Attendance
Lesson attendance and punctuality directly effect your grade. An unexcused absence is equivalent to a zero on an exam. Students should arrive at their lesson with their reed, mouthpiece and instrument in proper working order warmed-up and ready to play. Excessive tardiness will result in grade reduction. Every effort will be made to provide make-up times for scheduled lessons, which are canceled by the instructor. The instructor is, however, under no obligation to wait for tardy students or provide make-up times for lessons, which have been canceled by the student. Attendance at Saxophone Studio Class is mandatory for all Saxophone students. An unexcused absence from studio class is equivalent to a zero on an exam. All Saxophone music majors are required to perform eight times per term in Studio Class; more performances may be required at the discretion of the instructor. Attendance at recitals and solo performances of Saxophone students and faculty on the University of Alabama campus is mandatory for all Saxophone students. An unexcused absence from one of these performances will result in a grade reduction. An excused absence may be defined as a lack of presence at a scheduled event because of: 1) a conflict with another required University function, or, 2) for compelling personal reasons such as a death in the family or a serious illness. When possible every effort should be made by the student to notify the instructor, personally, a minimum of 24 hours in advance of the absence.
Performance Students will be expected to meet scale proficiencies commensurate with their level as outlined in the Minimum Technical Proficiency table. Furthermore, students will be expected to demonstrate reasonable progress through the general repertoire as outlined in the Course of Study. All Saxophone music majors are required to perform eight times per term in Studio Class; more performances may be required at the discretion of the instructor. All music majors will complete a series of recording projects during the semester. Students registered for two credit hours of study will prepare and complete two recording projects. Students registered for three or more credit hours of study will complete three recording projects. A convocation, recital or concerto performance will be considered one recording project. All students registered for applied saxophone will perform for a faculty jury at the end of the semester. At least one piece performed in said jury will be for saxophone and piano. It is the student's responsibility to engage a capable pianist, schedule rehearsals and at least one coaching with the saxophone professor and one studio class performance with said pianist prior their jury.
Written Students are required to maintain a notebook of written comments by the instructor along with those received in studio class and juries. Students are expected to provide written critiques of colleagues' performances in studio class. These comments are an aid to your progress as a musician.
Grading 65% of the student's grade will be based upon attendance, preparation, progress, and attitude in his/her lesson. 30% of the student's grade will be based on the quality of his performance in Scale Fests, Studio Class, Convocation, Pre-hearings, Juries, Recording Projects and Recitals. 2.5% of the student's grade will be based on the content and organization of his/her notebook and 2.5 % of the students grade will be based on attendance at required events.
Personal Conduct: It is hoped that students participating in applied study will be challenged to achieve their full potential. At the same time, we are committed to providing a non-threatening learning environment. Conduct that may be regarded as harassing as defined in the University of Alabamas stated policy will not be tolerated.
