In the fight for social justice, remember your

Stubborn Ounces

You say the little efforts that I make

will do no good; they will never prevail

to tip the hovering scale

where Justice hangs in balance.

I don’t think

I ever thought they would.

But I am prejudiced beyond debate.

In favor of my right to choose which side

shall feel the stubborn ounces of my weight.

I have posted some professional information about myself (in the form of an abbreviated vita) and a list of my recent publications. Where possible, I have provided links to the article. If you would like a copy of any article, please contact me via email and I will post it immediately. My professional interest is in education. Specifically, I am interested in philosophy of education, the social foundations of education, and teacher education. Within those areas, I tend to focus on issues of social justice, writing mostly on heterosexism and educational policy for language minority students.

In addition to my professional information, at this website you will also find:

syllabi to the courses I teach at The University of Alabama. Some of the them may be inaccessible to you for copyright purposes; I have readings on-line in PDF format and fair-use provisions require their password protection.

links to important websites related to my academic interests. These include, among others, Gay Lesbian and Straight Education Network, Southwest Center for Education Equity and Language Diversity, Coalition for Common Sense in Education, Institute for Research on Poverty, and a number of professional education organizations. I have tried to provide a brief description for each link and alternative links in the case of some of the links to right-wing organizations.

information about education in Mexico. "Seminario" takes you to pages based largely on a seminar sponsored by the Mexican American Solidarity Foundation. The pages provide information about K-12 education in Mexico and teacher preparation. It also depicts pictorially the stark contrast between private, urban, and rural schools. How different or similar are the tin-roofed, sparsely furnished schools of rural Mexico from the asbestos-laden, sewage covered schools described by Jonathan Kozol across the United States, e.g., in East St. Louis?

and a link to the Department of Educational Leadership, Policy, and Technology Studies (ELPTS)--my academic home in the College of Education. There you will find information about my colleagues, the department, and our graduate programs in Social and Cultural Studies in Education, Instructional Leadership, Educational Administration, Higher Education, and Instructional Technology.
