This sculpture illustrates the most significant part of this Greek myth:
the downfall of man.  Zeus came to Earth in human form because he heard
about Lycaon’s evil practices. People realized the presence of Zeus and
began to worship him, but Lycaon wasn’t convinced that Zeus was a god.
In his ignorance he attempted to serve Zeus the remains of one of his
servants.  As a result, Zeus turns Lycaon into a wolf.  Lycaon
represents the imperfections of mankind; his ignorance and arrogance can
be directly compared to that of human beings.  While Lycaon wasn’t quick
to believe that Zeus walked on earth, he was quick to insult the man who
he thought was Zeus.
