I am currently working on KamLAND. For the past three years, in a collaborative effort with colleagues from Tohoku University and Caltech, we have been developing techniques to remove radioactive impurities from the liquid scintillator in KamLAND. The research is necessary to prepare for a 7Be phase of KamLAND. This would be the first direct measurement of one of the major components to the standard solar model. The spectrum is currently hidden in KamLAND due to the low energy contribution of naturally occurring radio isotopes. To be confident in our ability to distinguish neutrino events from background, we must reduce the 210Pb by a factor of 105, 40K by 100 and 85Kr by 106.
