Biochemistry CUME 2/22/99
Will deal with the topic of F1-ATPases, with special focus on these two papers:
Noji et al. (1997). Nature 386, 299.
Yasuda et al. (1998). Cell 93, 1117.
You should read and thoroughly understand them and the general topic, which will involve reading several of the references. The first author of the first paper was a Japanese graduate student (Hiroyuki Noji) who recently won the Amersham Pharmacia Biotech & Science Grand Prize for his contribution to our understanding of these key enzymes. You can read his essay in the Dec. 4, 1998 issue of Science (Vol. 282, p. 1844).
An excellent review of the topic is also available:
Boyer (1993). Biochim. Biophys. Acta 1140, 215.
You may bring these articles and any other journal articles with you (but no textbooks). A general knowledge of biochemistry, biochemical techniques, and experimental design will be required for success in this exam.
