bradley4ster: I am trying to wrap my head around the R correlation that you get when running a multiple regression.  Is it the total correlation between all of your IV's and your DV.  Thus capture the toal variance accounted for from the group of iv's in your DV
cowzendux: It would be the correlation between the predicted value from the regression equation and the DV
cowzendux: The square of it, as you know, would be the proportion of variance that your entire collection of IVs could explain in the DV.
bradley4ster: ok.. yes.. sorry i forgot that step

bradley4ster: so then if you want a more fine grained analysis of exactly how much each IV is contributing we would then turn to each IV's beta weight 
bradley4ster: I am not sure why that displayed like that 
cowzendux: yes, you would then look at the tests of each of the individiual regression coefficients to determine which of them are able to uniquely explain a significant amount of variance in the DV.
cowzendux: The beta is the standardized regression coefficient, which is what you would get if you standardized both the IVs and the DV before running the analysis.
